"If you have a child who is challenging in any way, Margaret is the coach for you! Margaret's personal experience, compassion, empathy, insight, humor, kindness and wisdom will help shift your perspective and also will give you very practical strategies to help you find peace and joy in moments of chaos.  Her work is tremendously powerful, and it is a much needed alternative to the focus of "fixing your child."  Thank you Margaret!"  KM

Parenting the Child You Didn't Expect While You Were Expecting

  • Does your parenting journey have some sort of "unexpected," like autism, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia or SPD, which has you feeling like you are playing a never ending game of "Whack-a-Mole?"
  • Do you feel judged by family, friends, or even strangers for how you parent?
  • Do you feel guilty for wanting things to be different?
  • Have you tried everything else and nothing is bringing you what you actually want, which is to feel confident, empowered, happy?

If so, you are not alone! I have coaching tools, questions and strategies that I have been using personally for the past twelve years and I can help you!!

I coach parents who are on their own journey with some form of "unexpected"...
  • children who have special needs or are on their own developmental timeline
  • children who are totally different from your expectations
  • daily life just isn't the way they dreamed it would be when they had children
  • frustration over how others respond or behave with their children
  • judgement from all directions - family, friends, professionals and even themselves

I help them feel...
  • Empowered to be a leader in their life, making choices that are best for them and their children, knowing how to handle those who question and judge and setting boundaries when necessary.
  • Grounded when things and thoughts get chaotic.
  • Confident that when they notice tension in their life, that they can do something about it.
  • Intentional about what they are doing and why they are doing it.
  • Equipped with tools, questions and strategies that they can use anytime, anywhere to support them and their children.
  • Content and able to get a different perspective when they feel stuck and without hope.
  • Clear about what is important to them and how to create a life that supports it.

Most parents in these situations spend all of their energy supporting the child, which is strongly encouraged by society and professionals, I personally found that it was crucial for me to take care of myself in some unexpected ways in order to best support my son.
  • I had to allow myself to feel the emotions I had been repressing -anger, grief, sadness, jealousy, etc.
  • I had to realize that I was not in control of who my child is or his brain development.
  • I became aware of all of the thoughts and stories that I was believing about my son and my life that were causing me pain and suffering...99% of which weren't even true!
  • I had to reconnect with joy without putting it on hold until x, y or z happened. After all, I am the role model for my child of what it means to be an adult and don't most parents want their children to be happy?

I bring my experience to you with all of that as well as the tools I have as a parent, educator and master certified life coach to help my clients experience more ease and joy in parenting.

Ways to Work with Me:

1:1 Coaching

These 60 minute 1:1 sessions are for you if you want my undivided attention in order to help you with your specific situation.

If you've never done a coaching session before, it is simply me helping you with whatever is causing tension in your life. Common topics include...
  • preparing for family gatherings or responding to criticism and judgement from those in your life.
  • managing meltdowns with our children
  • creating routines and schedules that work for both parent and child (including electronics limits!)
  • how to talk to teachers or therapists when things aren't going well
  • supporting children in learning and growing while also not pushing the edge so much that they shut down or tantrum
Note- The above are just general topics and sessions are not limited to these.

After hearing what is causing tension in your life, I will offer up whatever coaching tools, questions or strategies I have that can help you. I also use my personal experience as the parent of a child who is nothing like I expected, and my professional experience as an educator, to offer up perspectives and practical support that can help you. I do this by shining a light on what might actually be going on, which frequently isn't the obvious reason or what you might think is going on.

These sessions take place over the phone so they are super convenient for you. You'll get a reminder email the day before our session and I will call you at our designated time.

Tele-Classes and Parent Coaching Groups:

I created my "Parenting the Child You Didn't Expect While You Were Expecting" tele-classes for people to learn the tools, strategies and questions that I use in my everyday life.

The Parent Coaching Groups are for those who've participated in Parenting the Child course so we all have common language and knowledge of the tools, strategies and questions.

The discussions we have are real, honest, supportive and positive with the focus always on helping the parents to lead, not in how to fix the child. When we place the focus on what we can actually influence, ourselves, that is when change starts happening and that is so empowering! If this sounds like a breath of fresh air for you, check out the offerings I have.

Why should you trust me with supporting you?

My passion is helping parents who are struggling with these things because I have been there with my 19 year old son, who is autistic and has ADHD, SPD, anxiety, executive functioning challenges and had apraxia of speech. As a former elementary school teacher, I thought I knew it all. My son being on his own developmental timeline threw me for a loop and I felt isolated, doubtful, judged and exhausted.

After years of feeling those things and not sure what to do, I learned and implemented coaching tools, questions and strategies from mentors that have helped me to truly have ease and joy in my life and I can help you!

Where I used to feel like I was only doing enough or a good job as a mom if my son was doing what his peers were doing, I now don't need my son to be different than exactly who and how he is. I meet him where he is and help him to learn and grow from there. I do the same for myself which is so freeing!! I learned to look at my thoughts about our life and approach things differently and in order to be the mom I wanted to be.

If this sounds like something you are needing or wanting, I would be honored to support you.

xoxo
